Osservatorio investitori esteri in Italia

Keywords:
Inward FDI; Italy; local development

Research outline
This is a three-year research project, involving Bocconi
University (Kites) and Confindustria (Comitato Investitori
Esteri). The project is aimed at studying inward FDI and local
development in Italy, through original survey data and in-depth interviews.
The research consists mainly in three steps:

1) Data collection. During a "pilot" phase, survey interviews and case studies involve multinationals enterprises (MNEs) that are members of the Confindustria Foreign Investors Committee (Comitato Investitori Esteri). Then, data collection is extended to a larger sample of foreign MNEs with affiliates in Italy.

2) Data analysis. Detailed summary statistics and econometric regressions exploit the rich dataset, to investigate the strategic motivations underlying inward FDI in Italy, and its impact on local development.

3) Policy implications. Based on the empirical analysis, a few policy implications follow, in the form of 5 concrete proposals to the Italian Government.
