Research outline and main results
The research aimed at analysing how international competition and increasing globalisation of production influence the labour market of industrialised countries. In particular, the research project has analysed two issues: 1) how far the international competition, above all of low wage countries, and the increasing globalisation of production, influenced industrialised countries' labour markets, reducing employment and pressing down on wages; 2) in which way the adjustment to international integration was influenced by regulations of labour market and economic policies.
The research project was built on several theoretical and empirical contributions. From the theoretical perspective, the analysis focused on the effects of the increasing international integration on the skill structure of labour demand and on the widening of unemployment rate differentials among regions. From the empirical point of view, particular attention was devoted to the Italian case, by studying the labour market effects of increasing imports from developing countries into sectors of Italy's traditional comparative advantage - durable consumer goods and mechanics. The effects on employment of multinational expansion and international de-localisation of production activities of Italian firms were also examined.
