Research outline and main results
The research has examined how regional innovation policies have affected the structural changes occurred in Lombardy during the past 20 years. The research analyses the latest evolution of Lombardy industrial structure and firms' innovative activities.
The second part of the research deals with the results from a survey of Lombard firms which lately introduced product or process innovations (with or without regional funds for innovation: L.R. 34/85 e 7/93) and/or benefited from Sectoral and Local Development Centres Services promoted by the Regional Council.
This survey finds out that firms are fully aware of Regional technological policies and stress the importance of services, information and knowledge external to firms' and connected with institutions, either within or outside the Regional boundaries.
Further, the research stresses the existence of different types of firms. As a consequence, Regional policies are not key for the success of the innovations of the most dynamic firms, while they have a positive value for firms, which lag behind the technological frontier.
