Research outline and main results
The research analysed two aspects of firms' innovative activity in Lombardy: new innovator and the innovative activity of multinationals firms. Patents have been used to examine technological entry in Lombardy and in the Milan province in the 1994-1996 period. An in-depht study has been conducted on new innovators in the Milan area with regard to the importance of patented innovation and the effects on firm performance. A further aspect of the research concerned patent activity of local firms with foreign subsidiaries and of foreign firms located in Lombardy and in the Milan province. The main research effort was directed at pointing out the relationship between innovative activity and internationalisation. Particular attention was devoted to assess the importance of patent activity for firms with foreign production and to the contribution of foreign multinationals to local innovative activity.
