Title
Innovation Related Knowledge Flows in European Industry: Extent, Mechanisms, Implications (Know for Innovation)

Coordinator
Franco Malerba

Research outline and main results
This project aimed to empirically assess the innovation-related knowledge flows affecting manufacturing industry and services in Europe.
In particular, the research examined the type, extent and effectiveness of knowledge transmission mechanisms, the geographical dimension (regional, national, trans-national) of knowledge flows, the degree of convergence of national innovation systems in Europe, and the most effective policy options facilitating the access to and the transmission of innovation-related knowledge in European industries. In accordance with these aims, the research built on different information sources: the EPO data-set (related to patent applications and citations to European Patent Office), the Community Innovation Survey (CIS), (a database related to research joint-ventures funded by European Union) and the PACE questionnaire (elaborated by MERIT Institute). Besides, an additional questionnaire has been submitted to a sample of 500 European firms, classified into different sectors. A few case studies, related to each country involved in the project, have been carried out as well.
