Research outline and main results
This study has utilized social network analysis to assess several aspects of behavioural additionality in the examined IST-RTD Programmes. More specifically, the study has used social network analysis to investigate whether Calls 1 and 2 for the IST Thematic Areas 1, 2 and 3 (Applied IST Research Addressing Major Societal and Economic Challenges, Communication, Computing and Software Technologies, Components and Micro Systems) of FP6 have been successful in supporting effective Network Hubs that nurture global knowledge leadership and European cohesion. Hubs were defined as organisations with many linkages and the ability to connect disparate parts of the network. In RTD Networks such organisations operate as knowledge depositories and sources of information and ideas. A large-scale empirical analysis using several extensive datasets has been undertaken in order to place the IST-RTD Networks within the context of broader Global Networks of collaborative knowledge relations that have developed independently of Community funding.
