Gianmarco Ottaviano

Gianmarco I.P. Ottaviano received his BA in Economics at Bocconi University Milan, his M.Sc. in Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and his Ph.D. in Economics at the Université Catholique de Louvain. He was Associate Professor of Economics at Bocconi University and Professor of Economics at the University of Bologna before moving to Bocconi University to serve as Professor of Economics since 2008. He is research fellow of CEPR London (International Trade and Regional Economics Program), Bruegel Brussels, FEEM Milan, CReAM London, CSLA Turin, CSIC Barcelona, GEP Nottingham.

He is the co-author of many works in international trade, urban economics and economic geography, including "Economic Geography and Public Policy" (Princeton University Press, 2003) and "Agglomeration and economic geography" (Handbook of Regional Science and Urban Economics, 2004).

He is on the scientific board of CASCC Turin and Luiss Lab of European Economics Rome as well as on the editorial boards of several journals including the Journal of Economic Geography (Oxford University Press), the Journal of Urban Economics (Elsevier), Regional Science and Urban Economics (Elsevier), Spatial Economic Analysis (Routledge). He is currently a panel member of Economic Policy (Blackwell).

His research results have been reported in prominent international newspapers and magazines, including Business Week, Economist, Financial Times, New York Times, Newsweek, Newyorker and Sole24Ore. His essay "Agglomeration and Trade Revisited" (with T. Tabuchi, Tokyo University, e J.-F. Thisse, Université Catholique de Louvain, International Economic Review 43, 409-436, 2002) has been cited in the Scientific Background motivating the 2008 Nobel Prize in Economics to Paul Krugman.
